happy birthday, Jeet!

Today is the birthday of Jeetendra Madnani, better known as Jeet, the matinee idol of Bangla cinema, who became an overnight sensation with the release of his debut film 'Saathi' (considered as a turnaround of sorts for commercial Bangla cinema) in 2002.

Wishing him a very happy birthday (it would be his first since his marriage to Mohana Ratlani early this year).
May Jeet deliver many more hit films in the years ahead.

'Jaani Dyakha Hawbey'

Director Birsa Dasgupta is ready with his second release:
'Jaani Dyakha Hawbey'........

Birsa Dasgupta is one of the most talented young filmmakers
from Kolkata.
Son of Raja Dasgupta and Chaitali Dasgupta (the former a director, and the latter a much known name from television as well as fashion), Birsa had made his feature film debut with '033', which though partially appreciated by the critics wasn't a commercial success.
This time he has made a youthful, breezy romance - which, however, doesn't altogether forgo Birsa's cinematic sensibility (something that is well-known to the film-buffs who have seen his short films).
'Jaani Dyakha Hawbey' stars Parambrata Chatterjee (who has been repeated from '033'), Payel Sarkar, Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar, Roopa Ganguly, Arjit Dutta, Kanchan Mullick, Anindita Bose, Dhruv Mukerji, Mithu Chakraborty, Debranjan Nag, Biswajit Chakraborty, and Shiboprasad Mukherjee.
The film has music by Indraadip Dasgupta and Neel Dutt.
Sirsha Ray has done the cinematography, and the film has been edited by Bodhaditya Banerjee, and has been produced - by Namit Bajoria - under the banner: Cinenine.

'Best Friend'/'Best Friendzzz'

'Best Friend' is the latest offering from Swapan Saha, who has given the Bengali film industry some of the biggest hits in commercial cinema. Therefore, 'Best Friend' ('Best Friendzz' is how the film has been subtitled in English) had arrived with a lot of promise and expectations. The story is about three friends (and therefore the three Zs in the English title). 'Best Friend' has been lucky to have generated a good buzz because of the catchy promotionals, however the film has failed to impress the critics, the lacklustre execution to blame. Apart from Mainakk, the film has Sujjoy, Priyanka Sarkar, Priyanka Ghosh and Biswajit in its cast.

Actor of the Year: Samadarshi

Samadarshi Dutta is definitely the actor of the year. He has been the loveliest surprise for Bangla cinema.

Brothers brigade - Gaurav and Arjun

'Idiot'

Ankush Hazra's first film 'Kella Fateh' may have bombed at the box-office, but the newcomer surely got noticed by those who matter in Tollygunge. And he is now to be seen in director Rajib's (of 'Amanush' and 'Paglu' fame) next commercial potboiler (yet another Southie remake) 'Idiot'. This time Ankush is paired with Srabanti, the director's wife, and the film marks the Bangla debut of Bollywood veteran Aditya Pancholi.
